Areas that used to be empty are now brimming with NPCs, quests and stories. Each inch of the world has been filled in, or sometimes expanded, so as to incorporate all the buy RuneScape gold characters, enemies and also features that Jagex are busy stuffing into the match for the past decade. The simple fact that Runescape is an internet game is now a bonus as opposed to its primary attraction. Jagex may take their match entirely offline and it might still be worth playing.
But that is the biggest difference between Runescape and its still running Old School Runescape counterpart. Both share about the exact same amount of concurrent players, but the way that players interact in every one is very different.
Old School Runescape may only have roughly 25,000 players in any given instant - hardly a scratch on the numbers it used to reach in 2006 - but its players have known the game for ages. They have decade-old friendships there, they know the best way to hang out, the way to interact and virtually every talking point the game and its storied history has produced. Conversely, many of the inhabitants of Runescape, myself included, are returning players or total newcomers. They ramble beyond each other without commenting, don't all throw at the very same areas for no reason or attend pretend parties in vacant attics... they just get on with playing the match.
There are online adventures to be had there, but the ones that I played were structured and curated than anything in Old School Runescape. My memories of Runescape in 2006 entirely revolve around interacting with other individuals. I had been scammed or lured into PvP zones and murdered almost daily because I was promised some talent from a top level player, but as frequently as players exploited my ignorance that there were countless times they provided to help me, taking me under their wing into testing boss battles or giving me loose equipment.
They created the enormous, sprawling Stronghold of Security and filled it with exceptional rewards simply to teach players about internet safety, they removed free commerce to stop new players getting duped into unfair prices, and made it so players can only lose a little bit of loot upon perishing at the Wilderness.
The current version of Runescape was essentially made for me. However, while I enjoyed spending a few days bumbling around its own world and revelling in its clear familiarity, it's done nothing to satisfy the Runescape craving which brought me there in the first place.I recently decided to have a trip on to Runescape's site and log in to the game to see what has changed. Now the game uses Java and C++ and has obtained many upgrades in the 11 years of my lack.
I, sadly, missed out on the original Runescape, joining in 2004 when Runescape two went live (which brought 3D graphics and other substantial updates ), back when I was a teen in school runescape mobile gold. I don't even want to learn the amount of hours myself and friends lost to Runescape across several accounts -- it would be well in the thousands.
