My game recommendation today of MLB The Show 19 Stubs

The Cubs traded for Anthony Rizzo in a down cycle. The Astros picked up Chris Devenski. The

Diamondbacks dealt for Patrick Corbin. The Brewers traded for Travis Shaw and Corey Knebel. Again,

this list isn't exhaustive, but it's powerful. The Cardinals missed the playoffs in 2016 and 2017, but

they weren't sellers. Yes, they traded Mike Leake to Seattle last August, but that was more about

moving on from a free-agent contract that hadn't really worked out as they'd hoped.

The front office should look at the rest of 2018 as an opportunity to do an on-the-fly reset similar

to what the Yankees did in 2016. Knowing they planned to contend again in 2017 but understanding the

reality of the standings in late July, the Yankees traded away Aroldis Champan and Andrew Miller.

The 2018 Cardinals, of course, don't have trade chips quite like Miller or Chapman. That's why it

would be similar in theory only to what the Yankees did in 2016 and not exactly like what they did.

Short of trading ace Carlos Martinez — who's on a team-friendly contract that includes club options

through 2023 — in a blockbuster deal, they don't have anyone who would bring back a return

comparable to Chapman (Gleyber Torres) or Miller (Clint Frazier).

Which MLB The Show 19 players could they trade, then? If they decide to sell, Bud Norris could be the

first one dealt. He's a free agent after the season and he has vastly outperformed the one-year, $3 million deal the Cardinals gave him this offseason. He has taken over the closer's role (17 of 19 save opportunities), and contenders can never have enough late-inning help in the bullpen. The fans might riot if the Cardinals trade franchise mainstay Matt Carpenter, but the 32-year-old could

command a solid return.

He's not great on defense, but he's competent enough to play first, second or third, and after a slow

start to the season he's up to a.909 OPS, 20 homers and a 3.4 fWAR (through Thursday). He's under

contract for $14.5 million in 2019, with a club option for $18.5 million ($2 million buyout) in 2020.

EXTRA, EXTRA: Carpenter makes history with power display Maybe they deal left fielder Marcell Ozuna,

who's set to be a free agent after 2019.
