Two things are true:WoW Classic's community is vastly more lively, considerate, fun, and fun than anything else going on in retail. I am not sure I will argue that this makes WoW Classic's community"much better" in any lasting way.I'll be the first to admit that the current community atmosphere in WoW Classic is more fun than anything I have seen in retail in recent years. People playing together, are group together, and being polite. Chat is full of mock arguments over if it's called Deadmines or even Van Cleef, not political disagreements. Chuck Norris memes and discussions of vanilla match mechanisms dominate chat. Yes, I have seen people being jerks. It hasn't been the norm.
I have a couple ideas about why this is true. Nostalgia is a strong draw; having the ability to conduct content with your friends and family for the first time, again is a powerful draw. I understand parents that play WoW with their kids and spouses who snore. A lot of people are having a good deal of fun in Classic with this reason. Happy men and women buff each other, they take turns on spawn points, and they line up for quests. Classic WoW's quite ancient game (1-10) is unquestionably more difficult than Retail WoW's equal, but Elwynn Forest remains a fairly gentle place to perform with.
WoW's early game hits a pleasant sweet spot concerning leveling speed, and while zone crowding is bothersome, there are usually some ways to mitigate it -- some zones are more popular than others, and there are optimal routes to take concerning leveling speed. Spawn rates and drop prices are low enough to be annoying, but they are not so annoying as to make the game unplayable. There are benefits to getting a great deal of people running around. People are prepared to set up easily and groups can knock out higher-level quests compared to a solo player can. Leveling speed in teams is fast enough to compete with Retail, and the game encourages grouping. At the moment, the game is easy enough that a not-very-good player and it can perform.
I have spoken to those who say they arrived back to Classic because they wanted. I am one of these. There is a contingent of gamers that are retail who sneer at the idea that anyone would want to return to Classic. A lot of people, including me, are having more fun in Classic than we've had in Retail WoW at years. But as nice as the present scenario is, any fair consideration of this subject has to acknowledge the other side of the coin.
