The miles system is not the only change. New Horizons also introduces you can gather natural tools to build tools and other items, crafting. To begin with, gather the requisite materials -- you need to acquire a recipe -- which is housed in your phone in a DIY program. This means that all your resources, from fishing rods to bug-catching nets, are breakable and will have to be frequently replaced, which may be annoying, especially early on. But there are two interesting things which come from the mechanic that is. To begin with, at least for me personally, is a sense of achievement. It is cool seeing things you customized your self and built and walking round your digital home. Secondly, it opens up the amount of things you have access to tremendously. You don't have to wait for items to appear at the store. Instead, over time, you develop a library of things you can build yourself, many of which have color and style choices.
Everything still moves forward very slowly, as I said. New Horizons, like games in the series, runs on a clock, and there's only so much you can do in 1 day. You are going to have to wait a day or two before it finished, when a new building is constructed. But that does not mean that your island will be empty for long. Here's an example: after two solid weeks of daily play, my island is now home to a massive museum full of fossils and fish, a clothes store, a large resident services construction, a general store, three brand new residents each using their own home, and a tent for anybody who wants to stop by for a visit. It is a completely different location from where I started. I have an orchard full of fruit which I gathered on other islands.
There are also a number. You have considerably greater customization within your personality, for example; you start out the game by choosing your appearance, and you'll be able to continue to change your look whenever you want with a remarkably large number of hairstyles and clothing choices. Once I unlocked the clothing shop in my city, I stopped paying off my mortgage and rather spent too much money on shoes and coats.
In the same way, you also have much more leeway for inspecting your residence. Much like in the spinoff Happy House Designer, there is a simple menu for moving furniture about, and that means you don't need to drag things around the space, and you will find far more options for where you place things. I have one wall full of hanging plants, and also what a walk-in closet with shoes and hats on the walls. Two of my favorite improvements are a new tool ring so that you can quickly access your own cable or web whenever you require it along with a smartphone app that keeps track of each bug and fish you've caught. Fantastic for completionists.
