"Through the years my salary became less than $4 [a month] and I simply couldn't do anything with it, so I decided to try a match my neighbor was telling me to play for money," he writes to Polygon on Discord. RuneScape was a lifeline for both his family and Martinez. He tells Polygon he earned $450 by golden farming in RuneScape, and used that cash to flee Venezuela and move to Peru. He continued to play with RuneScape and saved an extra $1,000, which he used to get his mom and girlfriend. "RuneScape is a super popular way to make money in this era," Martinez writes. "Depending on which state in Venezuela you're out of, pretty much everyone knows about RuneScape."
It is nothing new, as the infrastructure of Venezuela has been unable to operate in the past couple of years, however, it has become more conspicuous. Every Venezuelan RuneScape player we talked to for this story told us they sell their gold for U.S. bucks or cryptocurrencies like bitcoin, which means that their hard work isn't compromised by the hyperinflation of their own currency, the Venezuelan bolivar.
They do not struggle to find places to spend the money they earn, either -- a recent study estimated that 54% of trades in Venezuela last October were carried out in U.S. bucks. "I can not speak to my pals, but for me personally OSRS, my family would have starved," Martinez explains. "I know a good deal of people who left the nation thanks to OSRS and still know people trying to do it," he continues. "I would say that almost all of the youth who've had the opportunity to leave the country have done so -- likely either through OSRS or other means.
"Things are becoming steadily worse over time. I have my sister and nephews around -- you can not have a normal job; a huge amount of families live off the cash their expats send them." There is plenty of websites which specialize in selling and the buying of RuneScape commodities. It is a competitive marketplace, with several sites taking out Google Ads to appear at the top of search listings. At the time of writing, 1 million RuneScape gold sells for 63 cents.
