Free-to-play massively multiplayer online role-playing game (MMORPG) Phantasy Star Online 2 finally made its long-awaited Western debut on Xbox 8 years following its release. A couple of days after the Japanese launch on July 3, 2012 of the game, SEGA unveiled plans to bring Phantasy Star Online 2 over to the West in 2013. That never occurred, since the match was indefinitely postponed shortly afterwards.
The apparently canceled North American release resurfaced on July 9, 2019, during Microsoft's E3 press conference at which it was disclosed that SEGA was eyeing a Spring 2020 launching for the game, which would incorporate cross-play capability between Xbox One and PC. PC players won't have to wait to get in on the action, since the PC version of the game is slated for release this May.
Before Asiasoft finally decided to pull the plug on May 26, 29, support for the game lasted three years and watched the launch of its next episode.
The first Phantasy Star series was divided into four installments, all of which were traditional Japanese role-playing games. There were also 2 spin-off titles known as Phantasy Star Adventure and Phantasy Star Gaiden that started on the SEGA Game Gear console.
After a very long hiatus, the franchise was lasted by SEGA with a focus on multiplayer in the shape of Phantasy Star Online. The first and second installments of the series launched on the SEGA Dreamcast and were later published on the Gamecube and Xbox. The concluding episode -- Phantasy Star Online Episode 3: C.A.R.D Revolution -- was a Gamecube exclusive.
