Not only do they grow on dragon's backs but on the wall (reachable height so you're still able to mine it but you risk getting hit on the head resulting in two damage unless you wear your builder clothes from Tower Of Life Quest) and onto the ceiling!! (Requires 50 range to acquire any ore on the ceiling (and the essential mining level) but it works is that you fling your pick up up in the ceiling leading in certain ore falling as with the ores on the wall wear your own contractors outfit or (sometimes) suffer 2 harm another thing which can happen while mining in this way is shedding your pick axe since it got stuck!
