On the first release, LeBron James and Giannis Antetokounmpo each rated as the top-rated players in 97, respectively. Evaluating the incoming rookie class this year was a small challenge since prospects didn't play at the NCAA tournament and many others had irregular avenues to the NBA, including LaMelo Ball and R.J. Hampton. According to these constraints, the very first batch of ratings could change when the season starts.
It has been quite a while since we've covered sports titles at Digital Foundry, but with the arrival of NBA 2K21 on the newest wave of games, we are seeing something genuinely intriguing here, with a proper generational leap in fidelity throughout the board. To illustrate that, we have a look at the sport mostly on PlayStation 5 and PS4 Pro, but we also spent a while with both of the Xbox Series consoles. While it might not seem this way on the surface, sports games really are - from what I can tell - among the harder genres to work on. Truncated development programs require annual entries in each show, which means less time between each launch but more than this, these matches have to match up to a correctly'actual' encounter, often delivered using a TV-like demonstration. A game like NBA 2K21 needs to deal with real people in real places performing complicated, interlinking actions. If you're off by even a hair, you're diving into the uncanny valley.
What exactly makes this so difficult? Well, nailing the arenas and player likenesses is a massive part of the equation but it's the motion which makes this difficult. Realistic animation, momentum, and collision of each player on the court is a huge challenge. Developer Visual Concepts - whose job on this franchise dates all of the way back into the Dreamcast age - is doing some fantastic work here. As soon as it's easy enough to see the imperfections in the visuals, even in the event that you only let the game clean over you, then it really begins to look unbelievably authentic in actions. When shooting on cylinders, it truly does seem like a basketball.NBA 2K21 includes a vast roster of players from present NBA athletes to legends in the past. Players look round the court and respond to plays in real-time. It's not perfect, as there is a sign of the'dead eyes' effect, but it is solid. Much like last-gen versions, 2K21 uses a cloth simulation for uniforms too - because you move round the courtroom, the cloth flows and responds realistically.
