They prevail 4-2. In the last few minutes, Sanluqueoo's desperation draining already tired minds and legs. While the players whirl away in joy, the Gerena team slump down on their backs. Some look up, some look around, and some shake their heads. They know how much this game is about - it will go down in history as one of the most significant 90 minutes of football ever played. It won't be in the history books.
In lieu of club colours, every side has Xsens motion-capture suits. In the touchline, players are sitting on laptops. Short-range signalling equipment, which tracks players' movement to the millimetre, are sat in the stands alongside crew members studying tablets, which display live metrics. Many thousands of miles away an animation director is carefully watching proceedings take place on Zoom. However, this isn't part of a space-age team for scouting, or the latest coaching innovation.
These are the makers of FIFA 22. For the first time ever, EA motion-captured a live 90 minute football game, capturing the players' movements at a granular level which could be later added to its animation database.
The gaming publisher looked for the big details down to the minute details such as how a full-back hits the ball with their laces, to the way a player's eyes naturally glance over their shoulder prior to receiving a pass. Gareth Eaves (senior animation director at EA), led the session remotely. "Ultimately the more realistic approach leads to better games." "We have been wanting it for a long time, but the technology wasn't there."
In general, EA uses optical capture actors, actors and even the odd superstar footballer such as Cristiano Ronaldo or Lionel Messi, to write new animations. However, it is a tiny area that can only accommodate just one or two players at a time - making it difficult to strike the ball in a fast pace or to ping moves from one side towards the opposite. The motion-captured plays that are restricted, like keepie-uppies or one-on-one dribbles, need to be transformed by FIFA animators into fluid movements which ape eleven-a-side matches.
