In the last few minutes, and a sense of urgency consuming bodies and minds, Sanluque?o make a devastating breakaway - they beat the Gerena team 4-2. As the players race off in joy and the Gerena team collapses on their haunches.
Some are shaking their heads, and others are looking up at the sky. They're aware of the significance of this match can mean - it will go down in history as being one of the most important soccer games to ever be played. It will not be included in the record books.
For a change from club colours, each side is sporting motion capture Xsens suits. On the touchlinethe players are huddled in front of laptops. Devices for short-range signalling, that track gamers' movements in millimetres, sit in the stands , with crew members studying tablets, which display live data. A few thousand miles away, an animation director is carefully looking at the game on Zoom. But this isn't a part of a space age team for scouting, or the latest in coaching technology.
They're the designers of FIFA 22. It was the first time ever, EA motion-captured a live 90 minute football match, tracking the players' movements at an extremely fine level that could later be added to the animation database.
The gaming publisher looked at the major aspects down to the most minute of details: From how a full-back smacks the ball with the laces of their shoes and how a player will instinctively look over their shoulder prior to receiving a pass. "Ultimately Realism is the key to an improved game," adds Gareth Eaves, senior animation director at EA who was the leader of the meeting remotely. "We wanted to do it for a long time but the technology hasn't been developed."
