To learn more about Jagex's publication of This Means Warp, we called Outlier Games' founders Paul Froggatt and Matt Rathbun and Lead Product Director for Jagex Robert Fox-Galassi about their thoughts regarding this latest partnership.
Like many independent developers, our beginnings in the games industry began by experimenting with game concepts and code over a long time before we came up with something that was playable!
I have 10 years' experience working at Google before I made the decision to switch to game development full-time. Matt's experience spans Hollywood computer systems on movie sets, as well as stints in South Korean esports and mobile game development. We're so excited to share our work using This Means Warp.
A variety of video games have inspired an aspiring developer to develop their own. But it's rare to have an original piece of work taken over by the same firm that made the original title.
That was not the case with Brendan Malcolm, the one-man team of Australian developers Games By Malcs, whose idle RPG Melvor Idle is currently being released by Jagex which is the developer of RuneScape -- a game which was the primary motive behind his own venture.
Melvor Idle strips away the graphics and 3D environments of RuneScape and similar MMOs and reduces it into a simple idle-type game where players are able to manage their inventory, skills and quests. Engaging in combat as well as winning them earns you XP and loot, which can be invested into whichever skills tree or upgrades players want, while the same activities, such as making or cutting wood can bring rewards of their own.
