Although these can be somewhat relaxing, it's a lot of time spent doing the same thing over and over - time that could or might be better spent with a few shorter, but not less traditional video games.
Instead of being one continuous combat, RuneScape is a painstaking battle for survival that's very long and tiring, and doesn't ever truly end. It can also be immensely rewarding if one is willing to put the time into it, and I was. At least for a year or so.
I've never played any MMORPGs since, to my everlasting shame and sadness. Real-life cares multiply and I don't have the time to let them suck me in. As with all games, they're by far the most demanding, with many levels to be completed and items to acquire. Some have even died as a result of long-running sessions of the game's younger, but less well-known sibling, World of Warcraft, which I guess also makes it an eerie game.
Nowadays, you'll often find me enjoying Quake and Half-Life or playing Team Fortress 2 - games that come in force create a lasting impression and fade quickly. It's great to play something I like and get rid of quickly, as opposed to worrying about how many logs of wood are on my shelves or where I'll be fishing during tomorrow's session.
In all honesty, I do miss some of the never-ending grind and long-term commitment (and suffering) that is RuneScape. With its current version with the name 'RuneScape 3' (from 2013) with new content and a graphic overhaul, there's a glimmer of hope I may return to the game to see what's happening, just like I would with an old acquaintance.
Publisher Jagex recently announced that RuneScape would be available for early access for mobile this summer. From today, everyone can play its long-running MMORPG on iOS and Android.
RuneScape is completely free to play, but members can enjoy more tasks, skills, and additional features. It is possible to test the membership for free by registering for a a seven-day trial. Mobile versions allow crossing-play and cross-progression when connected to PC and PC, which allows you to jump between platforms and carry on the same way you where you left off.
