You'd like to switch your characters? You can also check central command to make sure you get the character that you requested, in the same spot you left it, complete with all the equipment you've spent your time working for.
Diablo 2, according to the team, was designed with the intention of being centralized. It's a disadvantage in that only a single instance of the service could be running at any time, therefore they are unable to transfer some of the burden to local servers.
"Importantly it is a singleton. Which means that we are able to run only one instance of it to ensure that everyone has access to the most current and accurate game lists every time," the devs wrote. "We improved this service in several ways to be more compatible with advanced technology, however, as we previously mentioned many of our problems stem from games being created."
For now, there's a variety of solutions for the short-term and roadmaps to revamp Diablo 2's structure so that it can better scale for new demands. The current service, which only provides games and lists to players, for example is being transformed into a service of its own.
The devs will also introduce an login queue similar to World of Warcraft, to avoid situations in which servers become overwhelmed when hundreds of thousands of game instances are launched all at once:
