There are clearly serious problems that the game is experiencing, and with fans growing increasingly antsy about Blizzard's apparent inability fix them, community manager PezRadar has released a lengthy forum update explaining what's gone wrong, what's being done to address it, and the reasons it may take a while to resolve the issues completely."
The morning of Saturday, Pacific timing, the site suffered an outage that was global due to an unexpected and significant increase in traffic," PezRadar explained. "This was a new threshold that our servers hadn't had before, not even at launch. This was further aggravated by an upgrade we implemented earlier that day with the intention of improving performance in game creation. The two factors together increased the load on our database globally, causing it to time out."
To help ease the load, Blizzard rolled back the Friday update, but that method was ineffective. An even greater growth in traffic caused a second downtime on Sunday.
Things went sideways yet again on Monday as Blizzard made fixes to Diablo 2's backup database and then tried to change it. When the switch was made, the database continued to run its backup processes instead of servicing clients on remote servers.
