MISSING Malaysia Airlines Flight MH370 could have got as far as the Indian Ocean, according to US sources, as the search continues to be dogged by confusion and counter-reporting nearly a week after the plane vanished.
Overnight authorities in Malaysia said they were certain the Boeing 777 did not fly on for four hours after it was last tracked on radar enroute to Beijing from Kuala Lumpur.
Despite this, US “officials” have told media there are “indications” the aircraft could have flown into the Indian Ocean — hundreds of kilometres away to the west from its intended course.
A US naval ship has been diverted from the Gulf of Thailand to the Malacca Strait to investigate reports of a radar contact in the area on the night the aircraft carrying 239 people, including six Australians, disappeared.
“The USS Kidd is going to the Straits of Malacca and will be searching in the western section of the strait at the request of the Malaysian government,’’ an official told AFP on condition of anonymity.
Meanwhile, India has established a search zone in the Andaman Sea. The new area covers 35,000 square kilometres off the northern tip of Sumatra, Indonesia’s largest island, on the opposite side of Malaysia from the plane’s intended path.

As misinformation continued to swirl around, they also rejected reports that police searched the home of MH370’s chief-pilot. Their best guess is that the plane turned back and that someone turned off the plane’s responder around the same time.
At a press conference in Kuala Lumpur, Defence Minister Hishammuddin Hussein debunked the fly on’ theory, saying that both Boeing and Rolls Royce experts are inaccurate.
And he revealed that Chinese satellite imagery, purporting to show what looked like debris in the South China Sea, were released without permission and were not connected to the search for MH370.
SIXTH DAY INTO THE SEARCH: HOW EVENTS UNFOLDED
As the search for the missing plane ended its sixth day authorities promised to spare nothing in their effort to find the plane and its 239 passengers and crew, calling it a crisis situation.
US officials also said yesterday that American military spy satellites detected no sign of a mid-air explosion at the time the plane went missing.
“This situation is unprecedented. MH370 went completely silent whilst over the open ocean … this is a crisis situation. It is a very complex operation and it has not always been easy,” Mr Hussein said.
“There is no real precedent for a situation like this. The plane vanished. We have extended the search area because it is our duty to follow every lead and we owe it to the families,” he said.
“Trust me, we will spare nothing in our efforts to find MH370.”
