Rocket League has indeed been seeing steady growth since the unique game’s launch in 2015. The “car soccer” game from developer Psyonix received rave reviews upon release and, fueled by a smart marketing campaign and free release to Playstation Plus members, commercial success, passing 40 million players worldwide at the start of this year. The game proved so popular that it’s Nintendo Switch port was a highlight at E3 last year, and it even saw a free-to-play release in China in partnership with gaming behemoth Tencent www.lolga.com .
The game’s esports scene saw similar growth. Psyonix launched its own circuit, the Rocket League Championship Series, in 2016, and last year added a development league called the Rival Series. Dignitas’ new team features two players from the team that won the RLRS Season 4, Fibeon eSports. Dignitas’ third and final roster add, Isaac “Turtle” App, competed in three seasons of the RLCS and is one of the game’s most popular YouTubers. Rocket League tournaments distributed nearly $1.4 million in prize money last year, ranking No. 14 overall.
